PREREQUISITES
Prerequisites for Au.D. programs may vary somewhat among different educational institutions, and the prospective student should check with the program that interests them. However, in general, the requirements will parallel those traditionally seen in other doctoring professions, and will typically include background courses in the physical sciences, mathematics, and the biological sciences.

COURSEWORK
Professional doctorate programs include coursework (in accordance with standards established by the Accreditation Commission of Audiology Education) and externship experience to prepare students for the independent general practice of audiology. Professional doctorate degrees like the Au.D. typically do not require a research project and dissertation of the magnitude necessary for a research or science degree, i.e., Ph.D. or Sc.D. Students will take an extensive series of courses designed to enable an audiology practitioner to diagnose and treat auditory and vestibular disorders.

Main coursework areas:

  • electronics
  • auditory and vestibular pathologies
  • hearing aids & assistive listening devices
  • auditory, vestibular and neuroanatomy
  • pediatric and geriatric audiology
  • deaf education
  • medical and surgical treatment of hearing and balance disorders
  • cochlear implants
  • genetics
  • pharmacology
  • radiology
  • forensic audiology
  • communication
  • remediation and rehabilitation of hearing and vestibular disorders
  • business and practice development
  • marketing
  • Industrial and recreational audiology
